Good morning! Today is October 10th, and let me tell you, yesterday was not the day to be a Philadelphia sports fan. Not only did Philly fans have to watch their baseball season come to an end on an error in extras, they then had to follow that up by watching the Eagles get absolutely smacked by the Giants, their rival who hadn’t won a TNF game in almost 10 years. While they may have been upset, the rest of the sports world seemed amused. In other news, Team USA Basketball has its newest coach, we’re previewing a whole slate of college football/NFL games, and more. Be sure to keep reading to go into the weekend knowing everything from the matchups to the spreads.
The Game Plan:
The Must Knows
NFL
Giants beat the Eagles 34-17 as Cam Skattebo ran for three touchdowns, becoming the first Giant to do it since Ahmad Bradshaw in 2011.
MLB
The Dodgers ended the Phillies’ season in 11 innings on a walk-off error. It is only the second time in MLB postseason history that a series has ended that way.
The Cubs kept their World Series hopes alive with a 6–0 win over the Brewers, fueled by Ian Happ’s three-run homer in the first and a dominant outing from Matthew Boyd. The series now heads to a winner-take-all Game 5 in Milwaukee.
NBA
USA Basketball is expected to name Erik Spoelstra as its next head coach, replacing Steve Kerr for the 2027 World Cup and 2028 Olympics. It will mark the fourth straight Olympics with a different U.S. coach.
For the first time in his 23-year career, LeBron James won’t suit up on opening night. The Lakers’ star is expected to miss 3-4 weeks with sciatica on his right side.
NCAAB
Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, the beloved Loyola-Chicago chaplain who captured the nation’s heart during the Ramblers’ 2018 Final Four run, has passed away at 106.
NHL
Jonathan Toews made his season debut for the Jets in their opener against the Stars, marking the three-time Stanley Cup champion’s first NHL game in two years after battling illness.
WNBA
Phoenix Mercury star Satou Sabally has been ruled out of Game 4 of the WNBA Finals with a concussion as the Aces look to close out the series up 3-0. The three-time All-Star is averaging 19 points and 7 rebounds this postseason.
